We will explore Costa Rica’s only significant Archeological National Park.

It covers a 218 ha area, which is mainly secondary tropical wet forest (where we may see the ecological succession in progress) on valley slopes surrounding the visible site. Of the estimated total city area of 20 ha, only 2 ha are open to the public.

It is cleverly positioned between 2 canyons with the volcano to its rear. There are large circular rocks; an aqueduct, still working 2,000 years later; a complex water containment system and an amazing cobbled stone road, just to give you an idea of a few of the ruins to be explored.

Human occupation was established as early as 1,000 BC; however, it was between 800-1,400 AD that the culture really flourished before being mysteriously abandoned.

You will be given a brief, but interesting, description of the history and origins of agriculture and crop domestication.

Guayabo Archeological National Park is home to a large variety of Costa Rica’s exotic bird life and keen birdwatchers will find it of particular interest. Yet, despite the myriad birdsongs, it is the utter tranquility that remains so remarkable.
