LA MARTA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE

Location:

It is located in the Talamanca Mountain Range, between La Marta, Atirro, and Gato rivers, and at the same time is a part of la Amistad National Park, which is considered by UNESCO as part of the natural heritage of all of humanity.

Area:

The reserve covers 1,500 hectares, with very abrupt topography.  The elevation varies between 750 and 1,950 meters above sea level.

In the interior of the reserve you can observe the great fluvial system with crystal clear, fresh water rivers, waterfalls, and underground caves.

The flora and fauna correspond with that of a tropical rainforest with a clear influence from the Caribbean.  40 percent is a primary forest and the other 60 percent is secondary forests which is in distinct stages of natural renewal. Distance from Turrialba to the Refuge:  30 minutes

Activities:

Walk on the trails, bird watch, look at the historical vestiges of an old coffee farm, and the ruins of an old coffee plant generated by burros in the late 1800’s.
